Arrest made in counterfeit case

A man was arrested Wednesday for allegedly attempting to pass counterfeit money at a McCreary County restaurant.

Sheriff Gus Skinner responded to a call at McDonalds in Whitley City concerning a suspect apparently attempting to pass counterfeit bills. The suspect left the scene before officers could respond, but a tag number on the vehicle he was driving was obtained.

Using the registration number to identify a possible suspect, Detective David Sampson and Kentucky State Police Trooper Craig Reed went to a residence on Sycamore Trail where the suspect, identified as Danny Johnson, was found to have $130 in counterfeit bills and a quantity of prescription medication.

Johnson was arrested on counterfeiting and drug charges, and the case will be presented to the McCreary County Grand Jury.

Sheriff Skinner said the case is possibly linked to a larger ongoing investigation into a recent spate of counterfeit bills appearing in the county. He advises citizens and retailers to keep an eye out for possible fake bills, and urges the use of counterfeit detecting pens, even if the bill appears to have been marked already.
