Homeless to be Counted Throughout Commonwealth
What: The K-Count, a statewide count of homeless Kentuckians of all ages who are living in shelters, on the streets, and other places not meant for human habitation, is being coordinated by Kentucky Housing Corporation (KHC).
When: The period beginning 12 midnight Wednesday January 28, 2015 until sunrise on Thursday the morning of January 29, 2015, local time.
Where: Various locations throughout the state, including homeless shelters, homeless transitional housing projects, city streets, and places not meant for hum habitation.
Who: Volunteers, homeless service providers, and local officials.
Why: The K-Count is a critical source of data on the number and characteristics of people who are homeless in Kentucky. The count helps to obtain data on the estimated size and scope of the homeless population on any given day in the Commonwealth. This information collected includes demographics, household size, and disabilities to guide grant applicants, Consolidated Plan jurisdictions, and other local stakeholders in the future planning and policy making. The court allows KHC and partners to assess the needs of homeless Kentuckians and look for additional resources while measuring the progress and performance of current homeless programs and services. The K-Count specifically collects information on unsheltered homeless to determine how many persons are sleeping in a place not meant for human habitation. This is the only time this is done throughout the year and a vast amount of information is collected on this population. This data has become increasingly important as a measure of our local and statewide progress related to preventing and ending homelessness, especially in relation to our progress towards meeting the goals of Opening Doors: Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness and Kentucky’s Plan to End Homelessness.
