It’s a Homecoming Tradition

McCreary Countians can look forward to an extra special, early 4th of July celebration as Historic Downtown Stearns rolls out a wide array of red, white, and blue special events on Saturday July 2, 2016.  The day-long celebration will be filled with classic rides, food, music, family fun, and fireworks.

Day long activities, beginning at 11:00 a.m. and continuing throughout the day, include vendors and concessions offering hot dogs, burgers, BBQ, nachos, pretzels, Kona Ice, popcorn, ice cream, funnel cakes, soft drinks, beer, and more.  Children will be able to flip, flop, and fly all day long with rides and slides at the “mini” carnival featuring a waterside bouncy, slip slide bouncy, merry-go-round, swings, and Euro bungee.  The McCreary County Museum will host a silent auction beginning at 11:00 a.m. and continuing until 8:00 p.m.

The Big South Fork Scenic Railway will make two excursions to Blue Heron at 11:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.  As a 4th of July treat, all who take the three hour excursion will pay local rates.

With music from the Big South Fork Music Showcase filling the air of downtown Stearns, classic cars will gather throughout the day for a cruise in.  All classic car enthusiasts are invited to show up for the gathering of vintage vehicles.

Scarlett O’Hara will invade the Depot of Historic Stearns from 10:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. as part of the McCreary County Museum Southern Writers’ series.   Author Terry Lynn Crane will be on hand to chat about the secret side of one of America’s favorite films, “Gone with the Wind.”  Crane will also be signing copies of her book, “Fiddle Dee Recipes:  A Taste of Gone with the Wind.”  Organizers for the Southern Writers’ Series also urge folks to grab a meal and a Scarlett O’Hara cocktail at the Whistle Stop Café in the Depot.

The day will culminate with traditional fireworks at dark.
