Man killed by passing train

A McCreary County man tragicially lost his life in a horrible accident Thursday morning as a result of being hit by a train while attempting to cross the tracks.

The Kentucky State Police report Edward Murphy, 75, of Marshes Siding was struck by a Norfolk Southern train around 9:57 a.m. as he attempted to cross at the George Jones Road crossing in Whitley City.

Coroner Daniel Ridener pronounced Murphy dead at the scene.

Trooper Reed stated the crossing signals were operational at the time of the accident.

Trooper Craig Reed is leading the investigation, with Detective Billy Correll, Sheriff Gus Skinner, Fish and Wildlife Lieutenant Stuart Bryant, Whitley City Fire Department, and McCreary County EMS assisted at the scene.
