Local gardeners plan for spring!
The first meeting of the 2015 “Grow McCreary” gardening group met last week at the McCreary Center. Local Grow Appalachia Director Lisa Cotton and Deputy Judge Executive Andrew Powell provided the 2015 participants with an overview of the “Grow McCreary” and “Grow Appalachia” programs. McCreary County Extension Agent Greg Whitis discussed soil sampling preparations.
Time was provided for participants to plan, discuss, and sketch their soon-to-be spring gardens.
Members of the public who are not official members of Grow McCreary/Appalachia are welcome to attend the monthly meetings and field trips to learn more about gardening. Future topics include: garden preparation, selection of seeds, mulching, composting, weeding, food preservation, raising chickens, introduction to Farmers’ Market, and small scale commercial gardening. Field trips to local farms are scheduled.
Classes, field trips, events, announcements, and gardening tips are posted for the public on the “Grow McCreary” Facebook page.
