Maxine Jones Waters passes

MaxineThe longtime matriarch of the McCreary County Funeral Home, Maxine Jones Waters, passed away Saturday after a “courageous battle with cancer.”

Born in 1932, Maxine had always been a beloved figure in McCreary County, starting her professional career as a hairdresser, before entering the funeral business, where she was regarded as a true professional and an icon in the community.

Waters, along with her late husband, Chester “Happy” Jones, and Kathleen and Bill Marnhout, founded the McCreary County Funeral Home in 1972, with Maxine gaining her funeral director and embalming license three years later.

Taking over ownership in 2001, Maxine and her husband Jimmy Waters ran the successful business until last year, when Debbie and Jim Murphy took over operations.

“For 43 years she has been a part of that funeral home,” her husband Jimmy said. “She loved that funeral home and she loved the people of McCreary County. She was just a people person.”

“She was a fighter until the end.”

Funeral services were held Saturday at the McCreary County Funeral Home, with her remains laid to rest in the Angel Cemetery.
