Woman foils gunmen

McCreary County Sheriff Randy Waters is reporting a McCreary County woman confronted a pair of would-be armed robbers Wednesday morning in a parking lot.

Sheriff Waters stated Rita Daugherty was parked in the Oaks parking lot around 6:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, waiting for a ride to work, when she noticed two men wearing face masks looking inside another parked vehicle.

Daugherty told authorities the men approached her vehicle and pointed a gun at her. Daugherty reportedly got out of her vehicle and confronted the two men, who turned and ran away.

The only description of the possible assailants officers have at this time is two white men, wearing masks covering their faces and knee-length shorts.

The investigation is ongoing, with officers reviewing security camera footage from nearby businesses to attempt to identify the suspects.

Sheriff Waters is asking for anyone with information as to the identity of the subjects to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 376-2232 or McCreary County 911.

The Sheriff is also asking for assistance in identifying suspects involved in a recent string of thefts and vandalism at the Stearns Golf Course.

His office is investigating the incidents, and stated a number of tools and a brass plaque has been taken from the property.
