Relay for Life Event Changes Location and Time
This year’s McCreary County Relay for Life event takes on a different time and different location as the relay moves to the Sandhill RV Camp on Saturday, May 21 from noon to midnight. Local event chairperson, Fred Patrick, is looking forward to hosting the relay at the Sanhill Camp.
“We hope people will come out to the Relay for Life and support a good cause while having a good time,” Patrick commented. “By moving the relay to Sandhill, we avoided the potential for scheduling conflicts with the high school, and at the camp, we have plenty of access to electricity and a permanent stage that doesn’t have to be set up each year.”
In the past, the Relay for Life has traditionally been held at McCreary Central High School on a Friday. However, the change of location and time seem to mesh with this year’s theme of “Camping for a Cure” with the event kick-off scheduled at noon on Saturday and a full day of live music, entertainment, and concessions lasting until midnight. In partnership with the camping theme, individuals can contact Melissa at the Senior Citizens Center for information about renting campsites at the event.
Several groups including Oasis, Southern Grace, Double Portion, and others will be performing throughout the day on Saturday. Activities include games, line dances, cake walks, a silent auction, etc. The special cancer Survivor Walk will be held at its regular time of 7:00 p.m. with survivors receiving refreshments, 2016 lapel pins, and 2016 purple Relay for Life survivor t-shirts. Luminaries will be lit at 10:00 p.m. Five dollar donations can be made at the event to have a loved one’s name put on a luminaria bag.
Relay for Life of McCreary County is a free, family friendly community event that celebrates local cancer survivors, remembers those who have passed away from the disease, and allows the community to fight back against cancer. This year’s sponsors are Outdoor Venture, Highland Telephone Cooperative, Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, Don Marshall Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Nissan, Kentucky Farm Bureau agent Josh Bruce, Arby’s, State Farm agent Randy Kidd, United Cumberland Bank, Forcht Bank, and Transamerica.
