Hubbs to be honored by School District

The McCreary County Board of Education voted to allow the renaming of the McCreary Central High School Auditorium in honor of long-time choral instructor Chris Hubbs during their Regular June meeting last Thursday.

While no formal date for a dedication ceremony has been set, MCHS Principal Sharon Privett noted she would be speaking with Mr. Hubbs to arrange a suitable time for the honor.

Hubbs taught chorus and led the MCHS Madrigals for several years before retiring. He is still active, leading the McCreary Alumni Group for their annual concerts.

The McCreary County Board of Education also voted to change their regular meeting date effective in July.   With the exception of November and December, the regular monthly meeting date for the McCreary County Board of Education will be at 6:30 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month at the Board’s Central Office.  Due to holidays in November and December, regular meetings for those months will be held at the same time and place on the third Thursday of those months.

In other business, the Board approved the 2016-1017 Fund 2 Budget.  Funds specific to this budget include federal, state, and local grants for programs and services such as gifted/talented, extended school, technology, Title programs, professional development, IDEA (exceptional children), preschool, etc.  Superintendent Cash noted that preschool funding, although at a lower level due to cuts in funding by the state, is in place for the 2016-1017 school year.  The District is awaiting approval of a Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday type schedule for students.

Additional items dealt with during the meeting included:

-Creating one intervention resource teacher/coordinator position and one curriculum and instruction coordinator position and one extra-service position for CTE coordinator and abolishing one assistant principal position at McCreary Central High School.

-Approving independent contractor agreements for Billy C. Boyd (financial), Jason Creekmore (instructional), and Shirley Surface (special education).

The next meeting of the McCreary County Board of Education will be Thursday, July 28, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. at the Board’s Central Office.
