A McCreary County man was wounded in an officer-involved shooting Sunday afternoon in Oneida after reportedly brandishing what appeared to be a weapon.

The Scott County Independent Herald reported Shannon O’Regan, 30, of Pine Knot, was shot by an off-duty Oneida Police Department officer after a confrontation in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart super center.

OPD Chief of Police Darryl Laxton confirmed to the newspaper that O’Regan was apparently involved in a domestic dispute with his wife that apparently escalated into a struggle, with the couple’s three-year-old child reportedly in the vehicle.

The officer, whose name has yet to be released, attempted to intervene, as additional officers arrived on the scene.

At one point of the conflict, O’Regan reportedly produced a black handgun, later revealed to be an air pistol. Officers demanded the suspect drop the weapon, but he refused to comply, and the man was shot at least once in the abdomen by the off-duty officer.

O’Regan was airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has taken charge of the case since it involved a police officer.
