NO Parade and downtown activities this year – Planning Continues for Heritage Trail Days

Street music, vending, parade, and other activities traditionally occurring on Saturday in downtown Whitley City have been removed from the schedule for this year.
With McCreary County’s Heritage Trail Days scheduled for the first full weekend of October, plans for the four day event are still being finalized. Although the street music, vending, parade, and other activities traditionally occurring on Saturday in downtown Whitley City have been removed from the schedule for this year, folks looking forward to the weekend will still be able to choose from a variety of hikes, races, and other planned events. One such event is the McCreary County Artisan Trail.
The McCreary County Artisan Trail will kick off Heritage Trail Days as it shines the spotlight on local authors, photographers, and crafters. Hosted this year by the McCreary County Public Library on Thursday October 6, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., the Artisan Trail is an annual event designed to highlight McCreary County’s artistic and cultural heritage.
“This year, we started out with local authors,” Holly Daugherty, coordinator of the event, said with a smile. “But then it grew and grew! Now, we have local authors, photographers, and crafters participating in the McCreary Artisan Trail.”
Artisans featured in the event will demonstrate and discuss their special talents and will have their books, photographs, and crafts available for purchase.
Artisans participating in the McCreary Artisan Trail are photographers Larry Coffey and Cathy Rose.
Local authors on hand for the event are Tonya Coffey, Savannah Blevins, Betty Shreffler, and Tonya Moreland.
Local crafters, most from McCreary County, confirmed for participation as of press time include Caroline & Savannah Thompson, Lori Ross (burlap wreaths), Danny Clark (woodworking), Lois Alcorn (Civil War rag dolls), John Gregory (wooden Christmas ornaments), April & David McCullah (woodworking/wooden toys), Bruce Neal (woodworking), and Kim King (doll clothes). More local crafters are expected to confirm their participation before October 6.
In addition to demonstrations by the artisans, there will be a special story reading by children’s author, Tonya Moreland. Miss Becky’s Cranky Folk Show will also be featured.
As plans for the rest of the weekend are finalized, The Voice will keep our readers informed.
