Tyler Dewayne Stephens-Jones, 16, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at 11:30 p.m. by McCreary County Coroner Tim Corder after suffering from apparent head trauma when the off-road vehicle he was riding rolled over.
The accident occurred at the corner of KY 90 and HWY 896, near a local convenience store. Corder stated Kentucky State Police reviewed security camera footage from the store and saw the young man leaving the scene when his vehicle hit a culvert and flip over.
The KSP is investigating the accident.
Jones was a junior at McCreary Central High School. When classes resumed after the holiday weekend, grief counselors were available at the school for students and staff if needed.
The School District observed a moment of silence in memory of Jones Tuesday morning according to School Superintendent Mike Cash.
