McCreary County apparently is not immune to the creepy clown phenomenon sweeping the nation as this submitted photo proves.

A reader submitted this photo of a clown lurking near Yamacraw to our Facebook page this week, so it appears the trend of “spooky clown” sightings has reached McCreary County.

Sheriff Randy Waters said he believes the growing number of sightings in the area is simply a matter of people copying recent viral photos that have garnered national media attention, and should not be taken seriously.

However, he said, the individuals staging the photos are playing a risky game in order to seek publicity.

“It is a dangerous way to get attention,” Sheriff Waters said. “It is only a matter of time before someone gets shot over something they thought was only a joke.”

He confirmed his office has received calls concerning reported clown spottings in recent days.

“My advice to the public is to simply ignore these ‘clowns,’” he said. “If we don’t give them the attention they want, they will move on to some other fad.”
