Instead of dashing through the snow in December, McCreary Countians can register and go dashing down the river in November as part of The Explore Kentucky Initiative’s inaugural “Big South Fork River Dash” on Saturday, November 12.

As one of the last southeastern paddlesport races in 2016, the race is sponsored by McCreary County Tourism, Farm House Inn Bed and Breakfast, Southern Paddlesports, Mountain Tech Media, McCreary County Chamber of Commerce, Be in the Water, DCH Technologies, Outdoor Venture Corporation, and the Big South Fork Scenic Railway.

During the 8+ mile dash down the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River, paddlers will experience the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area with its scenic gorges, sandstone bluffs, and lush forestland.

The event is free to spectators who wish to watch as paddleboards, kayaks, canoes, etc. race down the river to the finish line.  The River Dash will begin and end at Alum Ford.

Registration for the event is $35.00 per solo craft, $50.00 per tandem craft, $22.00 per solo kayak, and $32.00 per tandem canoe or kayak.  The five race classes are men and women’s stand up paddleboards (SUP)-all board lengths, men and women’s solo kayak, men and women solo canoe, tandem kayak, and tandem canoe.

Awards will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each class.  All racers will receive a swag bag sponsored by McCreary Tourism, free train ticket for the Big South Fork Scenic Railway, commemorative coin, raffle ticket for a variety of prizes, and a ten percent discount for dinner at the Whistle Stop Café.

As of November 7th, only 3 registration slots remained available for those wishing to enter the river dash.
