The McCreary Central Raiders were busy over the holiday break – winning five of seven games in two tournament appearances, ending the calendar year with an impressive 9-3 record.
The Raiders went 3-1 in the Arby’s/KFC Classic, knocking off Lynn Camp, Washington County and Whitley County. Their sole loss came against Southern, a 70-57 defeat on the third day of the tourney.
McCreary, Southern and Wayne County all finished the four-day event with 3-1 records.
The Raiders’ run was highlighted by an incredible comeback after being held to an 18-point deficit to start the fourth quarter against Whitley County. A trio of three-pointers from John Cash in the final frame helped propel McCreary to a 68-64 win over the Colonels.
The following week McCreary travelled to the Pine Mountain Classic in Pineville where the team went 2-1.
The Raiders opened with a 85-74 loss to Buckhorn, but rebounded with back to back wins over South Floyd (78-63) and Morgan County (68-44).
The Raiders return to action tonight (Thursday) where they will face what should be their toughest challenge this season when they travel to Southwestern to take on the 12th Region leading Warriors.
Southwestern is 12-1 so far this season and are averaging more than 78 points per game while holding opponents to less than 67 points. McCreary is averaging more than 65 points per game and limiting opponents to only 59 points per game.
On Monday the Raiders will face another District foe when they travel to Wayne County. McCreary returns home Tuesday when they host Russell County.
