Tourist Commission Selects Tucker to Fill Vacancy

Acting on a motion made by Suzie Strunk Thompson, the McCreary County Tourist Commission voted unanimously to forward Whitney Tucker’s name to McCreary County Fiscal Court for approval as the latest McCreary County Chamber of Commerce representative on the Commission.  The vacancy on the Commission resulted from the resignation of Diana Bybee.  Tucker is a Chamber officer and an internal auditor at United Cumberland Bank in Whitley City.

In other business, the Commission voted (pending proof of event insurance) to give a donation of $200 to support the 2017 Moonshiners’ Run Car Show and a donation of one lodging room for one night for two people during the Big South Fork Veterans’ Hunt.  Any organization asking for a donation must submit a completed donation request form to the Tourist Commission during a regular meeting in advance of the scheduled event.  Proof of event insurance is required.  Commissioner Suzie Strunk Thompson questioned whether monetary support could be given to local events without the Tourist Commission being added to an event’s insurance.  However, members of the Commission concurred that monetary awards given as donations or used for the purchase of advertisements during events does not imply sponsorship unless the Tourist Commission specifically expresses its intent to act as a participating or presenting sponsor.

The Commission discussed the possibility of The Sheltowee Trace Association hosting its annual conference on October 6, 7, 8 during the week of the Heritage Trail Days at the Flat Rock Church Life/Community Center. In addition, the Commission voted unanimously to purchase ½ page advertisement in the Lake Cumberland Stay-n-Play publication.

The Commission also changed its regular monthly meeting time to the third Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Tourism Office in Whitley City.
