Blue Heron Decoration Day
Photos by Eugenia Jones
Visitors and locals both enjoyed Blue Heron Decoration Day 2017 in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. The day was filled with lots of activities. Visitors with historic photographs brought their photographs to the event to have them scanned by Park Archaeologist Dwayne Scheid. The photographs were scanned to provide more information about the early days of coal mining at Blue Heron. Visitors also recreated a 1939 Mine 18 photograph in front of the tipple. Park Service staff provided special trail hikes, Jr Ranger activities, and historical presentations. The South Fork Jammers performed throughout the day.
