Rescue Squad recover missing boaters

Members of the McCreary County Search and Rescue Squad, along with other emergency responders helped locate three missing boaters on the Big South Fork this past weekend.

The boaters had set out for a relatively peaceful trip from Bear Creek to Blue Heron in a canoe and kayak, but apparently ran in to trouble along the way with the water craft becoming damaged and unable to proceed.

Search and Rescue were notified around 9:17 p.m. when the boaters did not reach their disembarking point as scheduled.
Crews from the squad, along with members of the Whitley City and Pine Knot Fire Departments, McCreary County Sheriff’s Office, Kentucky State Police and Park Service began searching the river banks and woods along their projected path in an attempt to find the missing boaters.

The three individuals were located around 2:30 a.m. at a campsite near Blue Heron. The campers reportedly found the struggling boaters and pulled them to safety. Due to the darkness and swift waters, the boaters remained at the campsite overnight, and were returned safely the following morning.
