Raiders fall to S. Laurel, drop to 0-2

McCreary Central missed out on its second chance to break into the win column in the 2017 high school football season. Visiting South Laurel prevented McCreary Central from claiming a win in a Week 1 matchup, pulling away to defeat the Raiders 42-6 in a non-district game on Friday night.
With the loss, McCreary Central dropped to 0-2. The Raiders remained in the loss column after losing to Perry County Central in a shootout in their season opener.
South Laurel evened its record to 1-1 with the win. The Cardinals entered the win column after losing to rival North Laurel in Week 0.
Quarterback Bailey Fultz led South Laurel to the victory over McCreary Central, completing 9-of-16 passes for 275 yards and four touchdowns.
Matthew Davis emerged as South Laurel’s leading receiver, reeling in four receptions for 180 yards and four TDs.
In addition to passing for four touchdowns, Fultz rushed for one TD in the Cardinals’ victory.
South Laurel excelled throughout the first half, eventually carrying a commanding 35-0 lead into halftime.
Dominant South Laurel led 42-0 before McCreary Central managed to get on the scoreboard.
The Raiders avoided a shutout with a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Hunter Jones scored McCreary Central’s lone touchdown on a 3-yard run with 10:05 remaining in the game.
The Raiders have regular-season games remaining versus Clinton County, Fort Knox, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Bell County, Corbin, Casey County, Jackson County and Lynn Camp.
Now, McCreary Central is preparing to host its third consecutive home game.
McCreary Central will remain at home for a game in Week 2 on Friday, Sept. 1. Clinton County is scheduled to visit the Raiders later in the week.
