Blue Heron Storytelling
Photos by Eugenia Jones
Visitors to the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area’s Blue Heron Coal Mining Camp were recently entertained by local storytellers sharing ghost stories originating from within the surrounding area. Relying on flickering candles to light the way, visitors moved through the mining ghost structures to listen, scream, and laugh as storytellers and musicians entertained. Storytellers for the event included: Debby Johnson, Lounicia Hughett, Jordan, Micah N., and Jacob Hughett, Beth Kilburn, and Peggy Sawyer. The Blue Heron event was recently awarded the Keeper of the Light award for outstanding cultural and educational value within the National Park Service.
