Grand Old Opry Star Steve Wariner Visits the Uptown Opry

Friday night September 1, 2017 was an unforgettable evening at Hap Strunk’s Uptown Opry Show. Grammy award winning country music star, Steve Wariner, treated the audience and the band with a four hour show that everyone in attendance will not soon forget! “Steve Wariner is absolutely one of the nicest people in the world!” said Hap Strunk, owner of the Uptown Opry and band leader. “Terry Wariner, Steve’s brother, is our drummer and every week he calls Steve and he listens to part of our show over the phone. Steve told Terry he would come and sit in with the band when his schedule permitted and did just that” said Strunk.

One of only three “certified guitar players”, (an honor bestowed by the late Chet Atkins) Wariner is one of the best guitarists in the world. His stellar career in country music includes over 20 number one singles, multi-platinum album sales, as well as having written number one songs for other country artists such as Glen Campbell and George Strait. Steve had the packed house from the first note of his number one hit, Lonely Women Make Good Lovers, a song Steve recorded as a tribute to his former boss, Bob Luman, to singing harmony and playing behind the other band members, Hap Strunk, Joe Hampton, Bridgett –Turner Gambrel, Audie McQueary, Larry Patton and Sarah Patrick. Steve and Terry teamed up to do an acoustic set featuring many of Steve’s number one hits. After the 4 hour show, Steve stayed and signed autographs and made pictures with the audience.
A member of the Grand Old Opry since 1996, Wariner began his career as a guitarist with country music great Dottie West and then the legendary Bob Luman. Steve commented, “I’ve had a fantastic time here at the Uptown Opry with Hap and the band, I’ll definitely be back”. The band wasted no time in making Steve a member of the Uptown Opry. “We have all been playing music for a long time and most of us have worked with several other country music stars at one time or another, but this was the best show I’ve ever experienced. It’s very rewarding to have someone with the talent and stardom of Steve Wariner come to my show and to know he considers us part of his musical family. It’s something none of us will ever forget”, said Strunk.

The Uptown Opry is located at 25 S. Main Street in Whitley City. A family friendly venue, the show is in its 12th season and runs every Friday night year round. Showtime is 7 pm – 10 pm, concessions are available.
