The McCreary County Grand Jury released a total of 16 indictments Monday on cases ranging from drug trafficking to bigamy.

But 10 of the indictments apparently stem from operations of the Lake Cumberland Area Drug Task Force late last year in their efforts to apprehend and prosecute suspected drug dealers in the region. The 10 cases were brought before the Grand Jury by LCADTF Director Robbie Clark.

Joey Thompson, of Pine Knot, was indicted on two counts of Trafficking in a Controlled Substance Second Degree for allegedly selling a total of three Buprenorphine tablets to a confidential informant in August and December of last year. He was also charged with being a Persistent Felony Offender after a 2001 conviction in McCreary County Circuit Court.

James D. King, of Whitley City, was indicted on two counts of Trafficking in a Controlled Substance Second Degree after allegedly selling a total of seven Buprenorphine tablets to a confidential informant on November 30, 2016 and December 13, 2016.

Kimberly Carpenter, of Pine Knot, was charged with one count of Trafficking in a Controlled Substance Second Degree after reportedly selling three Buprenorphine tablets to a confidential informant on December 7, 2016.

Tonya Daugherty, of Strunk, was indicted on two counts of Trafficking in a Controlled Substance Second Degree after allegedly selling a total of seven Buprenorphine tablets to a confidential informant on December 14, 2016 and January 11, 2017. Daugherty also faces a charge of being a Persistent Felony Offender after a previous conviction in 2010 in McCreary County Circuit Court.

Other indictments released Monday include:

Rhonda Jean Phillips, of Whitley City, was charged with Bigamy, after allegedly marrying an individual on October 4, 2013, while being already married to another individual.

Codie Creekmore, of Parkers Lake, faces two counts of Fleeing or Evading Police First Degree for reportedly knowingly and unlawfully failing to obey signals of Kentucky State Police Trooper Jeremy Elliotte to stop his motorcycle and stop running in an effort to elude law enforcement on August 10, 2016.

James Martin, of Pine Knot, was charged with one count of Possession of a Handgun by a Convicted Felon and one count of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia for allegedly having items in his possession commonly used for the ingestion and/or distribution of illegal substances and a handgun after a prior felony conviction on August 10, 2016.

Clarissa Lyons, of Whitley City, was indicted on one count of Possession of a Controlled Substance First Degree for reportedly being found with a quantity of methamphetamine on December 2, 2016.

Jacqueline Bryant, of Whitley City was charged with Escape Second Degree and Tampering with a Prisoner Monitoring Device for allegedly intentionally removing an electronic monitoring device and escaping from the custody of the Department of Corrections on September 21, 2017. Bryant also faces Persistent Felony Offender charges after a previous conviction in 2016 in McCreary County Circuit Court, for which she is still on probation.

Chelsea Sexton, of Liberty, was charged with Flagrant Non Support for reportedly failing to make child support payments to her child for not less than six consecutive months and in an arrearage of $1,000 or more.

The Grand Jury also returned a No True Bill against James M. Stephens and Paula Stephens in a death investigation stemming from a July 11 incident where a 79-year-old man was killed after being attacked by dogs.

The No True Bill indicates not enough information was found to prove a crime was committed or have charges filed.

The Voice would like to remind our readers that an indictment is not an indication of one’s guilt or innocence, but represents that enough evidence exists in a case to pursue the matter in a court of law.
