Voight closing in on 500 wins

STEARNS – McCreary Central High School boys’ basketball head coach Jimmy Voight is nearing a milestone in his coaching career. Voight is seven wins away from 500 career wins.

The Raiders were active throughout the summer. McCreary Central opened preseason practice in mid-October.

“We played around 20 games this summer against a very competitive schedule while not always having the entire varsity team at one time,” McCreary Central Coach Jimmy Voight commented. “It’s always tough in summertime because you have many things to schedule around – summer jobs, other sports and vacations. We had a good summer and hope to be improved after losing only one senior – Devon Hamilton – to graduation.”

McCreary Central will have the chore of replacing leading scorer and top rebounder Devon Hamilton, who averaged a team-high 15.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per game last season.

Both Hunter Jones and Ryan Jones are due back for McCreary Central. Hunter Jones averaged 15.1 points and 4.0 rebounds per game for the Raiders during the 2016-17 season, ranking second in scoring and third in rebounding.

Similarly, Ryan Jones averaged 10.5 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, ranking third in scoring and second in rebounding for the McCreary Central boys’ team.

The Raiders are scheduled to visit familiar foe Rockcastle County for a season opener November 28.
