Judge Jerry Winchester passes

McCreary County native and former Circuit Court Judge Jerry Winchester passed away Saturday at the age of 76.

Winchester, born in Cooperative, was a graduate of McCreary County High School, who went on to study at Cumberland College. Upon graduation he returned home to teach at MCHS before entering law school at the University of Kentucky.

He served as a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation after law school before settling in Corbin where he practiced law and was eventually elected to serve as Commonwealth’s Attorney for McCreary and Whitley counties.

In 1987 Winchester was appointed, and later elected to serve as the 34th Judicial Circuit Court Judge over McCreary and Whitley counties – a position he held for more than 25 years until his retirement.

Winchester’s funeral was held in Corbin on Thursday.
