McCreary County residents and businesses can expect to receive information on the new Garbage Service provider – Poff Carting – within the next week.
The new provider is finalizing details on an introductory letter detailing the service and providing information on how to sign up for service and expect to have the first of two planned mailings to the public within the next few days.
The McCreary County Fiscal Court selected Poff Carting over McCreary County’s long-time garbage service provider, Scott Solid Waste, earlier this year by offering lower commercial and residential rates.
But, as a result of the new garbage ordinance adopted by the McCreary County Fiscal Court with the new contract: subscribing to the garbage service will be mandatory, meaning all county residents must participate in weekly garbage pickup in some form. Certain exemptions to the mandatory clause exist, such as renters whose landlord provides a dumpster or business owners who have commercial pickup can dispose of household waste in their business’ dumpster.
Starting on January 1, 2018 Poff Carting will take over the garbage service from Scott Solid Waste and begin curbside and business garbage pickups in McCreary County.
Existing customers with Scott Solid waste will have their account information transferred automatically to Poff Carting and will see no change in the days of their weekly garbage pickups.
Those who are not currently customers of Scott Solid Waste can sign up for the new service by filling out and returning the form that will be attached to the mailing, visiting the Poff Carting website (www.poffcarting.com) or calling (606) 877-7760 or (877) 288-2981.
New customers will be assigned a pickup day, which can also be viewed on the website: and clicking on the Customer Resource tab to find the McCreary County Pickup Schedule.
Customers will be billed in advance quarterly, with the first bill arriving around December 17. The first payment will cover the months of January, February and March and be due by January 10.
Residential rates for curbside pickup stand at $46.35 per quarter (senior citizen and homestead exemption rates will be slightly cheaper). Customers can also rent a 95-gallon polycart for an additional $4.00 per month, though a one-time $50 charge will be billed for the delivery of the cart.
Poff Carting states garbage collection will begin at 6:00 a.m. on the scheduled pickup days, and advises customers to have their garbage at the curbside by 5:00 a.m. to ensure pickup. Collection will be continued on regular scheduled days except for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Customers whose pickup days fall on those holidays will have pickup the following day.
Residential customers will be limited to six 30-gallon garbage bags per week.
Bulk items, such as appliances or couches can be picked up from the curbside, but will incur an additional charge that must be paid for in advance. Poff Carting requires customers requiring a bulk item pickup to contact the office to schedule and ask that all cloth and upholstery covered items be wrapped in plastic and taped closed prior to collection.
Poff Carting will also assist with large piles of garbage for pick up, but it may constitute an additional charge and must be scheduled in advance.
Poff Carting will also operate the Transfer Station on at least a part time basis, but have not set hours as of yet. Only citizens who have a current account with Poff Carting will be allowed to use the Transfer Station.
