Lady Raiders drop district game to Southwestern

SOMERSET – McCreary Central fell behind early and couldn’t recover from its slow start as host Southwestern prevailed 60-21 in a 48th District girls’ basketball game on Friday night.
With the loss, McCreary Central slipped to 7-16 overall and 0-3 in the 48th District.
Southwestern improved to 15-4 overall and 4-0 in the district with the win.
Productive Southwestern shot 47.1 percent (24-of-51) from the field. The Lady Warriors were 4-of-8 from 3-point range.
Southwestern shot 53.5 percent (8-of-15) from the free throw line.
Winning the battle of the boards, Southwestern outrebounded the Lady Raiders 27-25
Sophomore forward Regi Cundiff led a balanced Southwestern scoring effort with 11 points. In all, 14 different Southwestern players provided scoring.
Additional scorers for the Lady Warriors were McKayla Noritis (seven points), Alexa Smiddy (six points), Kaylee Young (five points), Kennedy Harris (five points), Kylie Foreman (four points), Kayla Hall (three points), Madison Phelps (three points), Kallie Sheron (three points), Grace Taylor (three points), Jenna Wood (three points), Marissa Loveless (two points) and Ayden Smiddy (one point).
McCreary Central shot 23.3 percent (7-of-30) from the field. The Lady Raiders were 1-of-9 from 3-point range.
McCreary Central shot 66.9 percent (6-of-9) from the free throw line.
Freshman forward/guard Elizabeth Anderson led McCreary Central with 11 points. Anderson was the only McCreary Central player to reach double figures in the scoring column.
Macey Welchel scored four points while Allyson Anderson, Makenzie Cox and Cassandra Akers added two points apiece for the Lady Raiders in the loss.
McCreary Central entered the week with regular-season games remaining versus Jellico (Tenn.), Wayne County, Lexington Christian, Pulaski County, Casey County, Rockcastle County and West Jessamine.
Southwestern notched its second win over McCreary Central in three weeks. In a 48th District girls’ basketball game played in Stearns on January 5, Southwestern pulled away to win 72-38 over McCreary Central.
Both McCreary Central and Southwestern will compete in the 48th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament later in the month.
