LIBERTY – Visiting McCreary Central pulled away to defeat 12th Region rival Casey County 12-3 in a high school softball season opener on Friday.
Turning in an impressive offensive performance, McCreary Central plated a dozen runs via 13 hits.
“This was a nice win for the team,” McCreary Central Coach Dottie Cotton said, following her team’s triumph. “It’s always nice to pick up the first win of the season, especially against a 12th Region opponent.”
Cotton was quite pleased her team’s offensive effort.
“I was very pleased with our hitting and the ability to get players in scoring position,” confided Cotton. “We scored 12 runs off of 13 hits and racked up nine RBIs.”
Sophomore Allyson Anderson went 3-for-5 for the Lady Raiders, smacking a two-run home run and legging out a triple while delivering five RBIs.
Junior Grace Jones went 3-for-4 with a double and two singles for the Lady Raiders.
Aiding the McCreary Central offensive attack, Cammie Gilreath, Celya Kiser and Jayci Bell finished with two hits apiece in the triumph.
McCreary Central pitcher Macey Welchel pitched a complete game three-hitter. Welchel registered seven strikeouts.
“Defensively, junior Macey Welchel did a great job, throwing seven strikeouts and only waking one,” added Cotton. “We had more fielding errors than we had hoped for, though. With time, we will make those plays.”
Casey County left eight runners on base during the losing effort.
McCreary Central is slated to host Casey County for a late-season game May 7.
