Bald Knob Prescribed Fire Planned at Big South Fork NRRA
During the latter part of this week, April 11-14, 2018, fire crews hope to conduct a large prescribed fire within Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. Prescribed fires, as defined in the approved Fire Management Plan, will be located within the boundaries of the park.
A prescribed fire at Bald Knob in the Kentucky section of the park may be conducted only if weather and conditions meet the defined prescription. Approximately 2,000 acres between Waters Cemetery Road and Ledbetter multi-use trail are scheduled to be burned. During the burns, some park roads and trails may be closed temporarily for visitor safety. Turkey hunters are encouraged to check with the Bandy Creek Visitor Center before planning their opening morning hunting in the Bald Knob area.
Fire is an essential, natural process, having shaped the landscape for thousands of years, releasing, and recycling nutrients tied up in vegetation, duff, and organic soil layers, improving the overall health of plants and animals.
Please contact the Bandy Creek Visitor Center at (423) 286-7275 for the latest information on the current status of any burn or associated closure.
