Blue Heron Decoration Day: Hike to Dick Gap overlook

Earn points towards your 2018 GO Big patch by joining us for a special rails-to-trails hike to Dick Gap overlook during the 4th Annual Blue Heron Decoration Day event on Saturday, May 19, at 12:30 p.m. (ET). Follow the footsteps of the men and women who worked and lived at Mine 18 as we hike along the Kentucky trail. We will travel through historic remains and beautiful rock formations before we summit one of the best overlooks in the park.
Take the Big South Fork Scenic Railway or make your way to the Blue Heron outdoor museum by car. Meet at the Blue Heron Interpretive Center’s train depot at the end of Kentucky Route 742. This moderate hike is 3.5 miles round trip, but there is a set of steep stairs. Please wear weather appropriate clothing and bring water and snacks. Hikers are encouraged to bring well-behaved dogs; however, leashes are required.

After our hike, stick around for the remaining Decoration Day festivities as we celebrate the rich history of the area. This event is free of charge, and everyone is welcome. For directions or additional information, please call the Blue Heron Interpretive Center at (606) 376-3787. For tickets on the Big South Fork Scenic Railway, please call (606) 376-5330.
