STEARNS – McCreary Central managed to outlast visiting Southwestern 3-2 in a 48th District softball game on Wednesday, May 2, thanks to a walkoff from Macey Welchel.
The 12th District softball game was tied 2-2 with McCreary Central batting in the bottom half of the seventh inning when Welchel drilled a solo homer.
In addition to providing an offensive lift at the plate and taking on the role of offensive hero, Welchel worked a complete game in the circle and earned the pitching win. Welchel surrendered two runs on two hits over seven innings, striking out five.
Southwestern pitcher Kaitlyn Gwin took the loss. Gwin allowed three hits and three runs over six innings, striking out 10 and walking zero.
Welchel clubbed a pair of home runs for the Lady Raiders. She hit her first homer for the Lady Raiders in the opening inning.
Welchel paced McCreary Central at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Jayci Bell accounted for McCreary Central’s other hit in the district triumph.
The Lady Raiders edged Southwestern 3-2 in the hits column and won despite committing four errors.
Gwin and Lille Turpin provided one hit apiece for Southwestern in the district setback.
Excelling defensively, Southwestern turned in an error-free performance.
Both McCreary Central and Southwestern will compete in the 48th District Softball Tournament later in the month.
