National Trails Day: Devil’s Jump evening hike, June 2
Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the National Trail System during National Trails Day. Join a park ranger at 7 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, June 2, for a moderately easy 2.2 mile evening walk along the Big South Fork River while passing by evidence of the area’s mining legacy. This ranger-led hike is free of charge. We will start out taking the old tram railway and pass by Mine 18’s powder magazine before eventually taking the Blue Heron loop trail to the class 4 rapid. Please wear weather-appropriate clothing and footwear and bring plenty of water. Everyone is welcome.
National Trails Day started in 1993 to increase stewardship through awareness and service learning projects of the National Trails System. With hundreds of miles of trails in the park, hikers, bikers and horse riders can explore the backcountry of Big South Fork NRRA. The park maintains its trails with help from partners and volunteers. The GO BIG 2018 Challenge is a year-long park-wide event designed to motivate visitors to go out and explore their park. Participants will earn points by answering questions about the park, becoming a volunteer, taking part in National Park Service programs and events as well as hiking, biking or paddling in the Big South Fork NRRA. If you earn 100 points, you will receive a GO BIG 2018 Challenge patch, and awards will be given at the GO BIG 2018 celebration on December 8.
