Lady Raiders finish runner-up to Southwestern in 48th District

MONTICELLO – McCreary Central fell behind early and couldn’t recover from its slow start as Southwestern pulled away to win 17-2 in five innings in the 48th District Softball Tournament championship game at Wayne County High School on Wednesday, May 23.
The setback left McCreary Central with a runner-up finish in the 48th District.
With the loss, McCreary Central dropped to 15-9.
Southwestern improved to 20-9 with the win.
Both Southwestern and McCreary Central advanced to the 12th Region Softball Tournament.
Southwestern pitcher Kaitlyn Gwin earned the win. Gwin allowed two runs on five hits while striking out six and walking one.
McCreary Central pitcher Macey Welchel took the loss. Welchel allowed nine hits and 12 runs over two and two-thirds innings, striking out two.
Southwestern outhit McCreary Central 15-5. Gwin, Callie Burton, Olivia Wilds, Lille Turpin and Madison Gaskin each provided multiple hits for the Lady Warriors. Helping her pitching cause at the plate, Gwin delivered two hits and four RBIs. Burton, another productive batter, provided three hits and three RBIs for Southwestern in the triumph. Players throughout the Southwestern lineup contributed at the plate as Wilds added three hits of her own.
In addition to excelling offensively, Southwestern flourished in the field, turning in an error-free performance.
Welchel helped her pitching cause at the plate, hitting a home run in the third inning. The productive Welchel, Grace Jones, Taylor Sumner, Emily Anderson and Cammie Gilreath each collected one hit for McCreary Central in the loss.
The Lady Raiders struggled defensively, committing six errors.
Along with Southwestern and McCreary Central, the other teams to advance to the 12th Region Softball Tournament were East Jessamine, Pulaski County, Garrard County, Boyle County, Rockcastle County and Mercer County.
