Fatal three-car collision

A Whitley City man died Thursday afternoon as a result of a three-car collision at the intersection of U.S. 27 and Williamsburg Street.
McCreary County Sheriff Randy Waters stated witness reports said Danny Courtney, 70, of Whitley City was driving a 1998 Ford Escort was turning from East Williamsburg Street on to northbound U.S. 27 around 12:36 Thursday afternoon when he was struck by a gold Toyota Camary, driven by Judy Chitwood, 69, of Whitley City.
Chitwood’s vehicle struck Courtney’s on the front driver’s side, sending the car on to its side and in to a 2003 Dodge Dart, driven by James Cox, 69, of Williamsbug, who was waiting in the turn lane on the southbound side of the highway.
Courtney, who was partially ejected from his vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene by McCreary County Coroner Tim Corder. Chitwood reportedly told officials she did not remember anything prior to the crash. Chitwood was transported to the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the accident. Cox was uninjured.
The McCreary County Sheriff’s Department is conducting the investigation.
Members of the Whitley City Fire Department and McCreary County EMS assisted at the scene.
