The McCreary County School District Summer Food Program is off and running this week. The program, designed to provide healthy and nutritious meals to children under the age of 18 over the summer will deliver free lunches to the children to at least five drop off locations throughout the county.
Food Service Director Mitzi Stephens and her staff stopped off at the McCreary Public Library Wednesday, delivering over 30 lunches to the children participating in the reading program and others before heading off the their next stop.
The lunches are free to any child 18 or under, and will be offered every week-day through August 2. Stephens does ask that if your child wishes to receive a lunch to phone ahead so the staff has an idea on how many lunches to prepare that day.
The bus will deliver lunches at the following locations and times:
10:30 to 10:55 – McCreary County Apartments
11:00 to 11:30 – McCreary County Public Library
11:40 – 12:05 – McCreary County Park
12:15 – 12:40 – Apartments on Pigskin Road
12:50 – 1:15 – Pine Knot Housing Authority
Adjustments to the time may be made and additional drop off locations may be added over the course of the summer. Any changes or additions can be viewed on the District’s web page.
Stephens said she hopes to serve at least 5,000 lunches this summer in the inaugural year of the program, and hopes to see it continue to grow in the future. Anyone seeking more information about the program can view the District’s web site at www.mccreary.k12.ky.us or contact Stephens directly at 606-310-1933.
