McCreary County Judge Executive Jimmie Greene II has issued a burn ban for the county due to the dry conditions and increased risk of forest fires.
The ban prohibits any outdoor burning in the county until the ban is lifted due to a lack of precipitation over the past month and the predicted weather forecast for the near future.
According to Kentucky Mesonet data, the last significant rainfall in McCreary County occurred on August 27th, when 0.88 inches of rain fell. A total of 43.32 inches of rain has been recorded by the weather-measuring device, located in Whitley City, over the past 9 months.
Over the last decade the average monthly rainfall recorded by the Mesonet station has been about 3.7 inches for September.
