A gofundme account has been established to help a local family who suffered a terrible car accident while traveling to Alabama to visit family for Christmas.
According to the fundraising site the Taylor family were traveling on December 23 when their van was hit in an accident. A total of eight people, adults and children, were in the vehicle at the time of the accident, with all needing to be extricated from the wreckage. Four of the family members were seriously injured in the crash and needed surgery and hospitalization.
The father, Dewayne, who is a paraplegic and is confined to a wheelchair, suffered fractured vertebra in his neck, a broken pelvis and ribs, and other injuries.
The mother, Charlotte, had her leg struck under a seat in the van and suffered a fractured tibia and clavicle. She is confined to a wheelchair for at least a few weeks and is unable to provide for her family.
Two teens in the vehicle also required surgery for broken bones and vertebra. The other children in the vehicle suffered minor cuts and bruises.
A week after the accident the family has been able to return home, but still face many challenges in their recovery.
The gofundme account is seeking to raise $25,000 to replace the specially equipped van to accommodate the wheelchair. The vehicle is the family’s primary transportation, and was only covered by liability insurance. It also seeks to help replace Dewayne’s specialty wheelchair.
