Honoring Our Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient

Photo by Eugenia Jones Members of the local VFW and American Legion posts were able to achieve their goal of erecting a beautiful monument honoring McCreary County’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, Wilburn K. Ross, on the Courthouse lawn in Whitley City. Ross singlehandedly fought off eight German attacks during a WW II battle in France. Ross was born and raised in Strunk, KY and frequently returned to his childhood home to visit up until his passing in 2017. Ross’s nephew, Dwight, with his wife, Stephanie, watched as workers from Pine Knot Monument erected the glistening black monument. Ross’s nephew was visibly touched when he saw the monument honoring his uncle. “It is such an honor,” Dwight said. A formal unveiling and dedication will take place at the Courthouse on July 25 at 10:00 a.m. Pictured above are Dwight and Stephanie Ross with McCreary County Judge Executive Jimmie “Bevo” Greene II.
