Sheriff Randy Waters reported that on May 5, 2021 Deputy Stuart Bryant observed a passenger in a vehicle, Andrew Adams, who had outstanding warrants and initiated a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle, Joshua Thomas, was operating the vehicle with only a permit and did not have proof of insurance.
Deputy Bryant noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. When the driver said there was not any marijuana in the car the officer asked if he could look. A large zip lock bag of marijuana and scales were found in the glove compartment. A High Point rifle loaded with 9mm shells was found in the back seat.
Joshua Tristan Thomas, age 19, of Strunk, KY was arrested and charged for the alleged offense of Failure of Owner to Maintain Required Insurance, 1st Offense, Instructional Permit Violations, and Trafficking in Marijuana (Less Than 8 OZ.) 1st Offense (Enhancement).
Andrew Thomas Adams, age 20, of Pine Knot, KY was arrested and charged for the alleged offense of Failure to Appear, Contempt of Court, Trafficking in Marijuana (Less Than 8 Oz.) 1st Offense (Enhancement).
Possession of less than 8 ounces of marijuana, first offense, is a misdemeanor, but the possession of a gun with marijuana increases the charge from a misdemeanor to a felony. Both men were lodged in the Knox County Detention Center.
The McCreary County Sheriff’s Office is in charge of the investigation.
