Welcoming McCreary County’s K-9 Officer
By Eugenia Jones
The McCreary County Sheriff’s Office is welcoming a K-9 Officer to their staff-a nine month old black Labrador named Sam. Sam was purchased by the Champions for a Drug Free McCreary County organization and will partner up with Deputy Dustin Ridner.
“Sam will be trained to sniff out drugs while being used during traffic stops, with search warrants, etc.,” Sheriff Randy Waters noted. “We also want to use Sam in the schools to educate about law enforcement and drugs. That’s a big reason why we went with a Lab because it is usually easier to go in the schools with that breed.”
Ridner and Sam began their training in Somerset earlier this week. The pair will be patrolling soon in a special K-9 unit vehicle with Sam proudly wearing an “In Training” vest prior to his official induction into the McCreary County Sheriff’s Office.
