Enjoy the McCreary County Banquet of Blessings

Annual Christmas Eve Community Meal is Friday

By Eugenia Jones

McCreary Countians can enjoy a hot Christmas Eve feast tomorrow (Friday, December 24) during the 16th annual McCreary County Banquet of Blessings.

Due to COVID-19 precautions, the free dinners will be served to-go during a drive-thru process.  Dinners include turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans, rolls and pie.  The dinners will be served from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the McCreary County Middle School parking lot.

If anyone wants or knows of someone who would like a hot meal but has no transportation, call 606-310-9757 and leave a message with name, street address, phone number, and number of meals.  Organizers hope everyone will be able to show up in person at the middle school as there will be a limited number of fruit bags as long as they last.  Before racing back to the North Pole to load up for his night of deliveries, Santa will be on hand to help pass out gifts to children.

Organizers spend all year raising money to pay for the holiday meal.  Last year, 1,600 people enjoyed the meal at an approximate total cost of $7,000.  With the rising cost of food, feeding the same number of people costs more this year.  The annual event is accomplished strictly through donations and volunteer efforts.  Leftover food items and supplies (to-go utensils, etc.) are saved for the next Banquet of Blessings or are donated to the local school Backpack Program to help feed children throughout the year.

Donations for the Banquet are accepted throughout the year, and donations can be made through the McCreary County Banquet of Blessings Facebook page.  Checks can be made out to Banquet of Blessings and mailed to Jill Dolen, PO Box 1311, Pine Knot, KY 42635.  Donations can also be made directly to a special account at any McCreary County branch of United Cumberland Bank.  If donors provide a mailing address, receipts for tax purposes will be sent after Christmas.
