Sweet Dreams

Thanks to McCreary County volunteers, children get new beds and bedding

Thanks to local donations and volunteers, twenty-eight McCreary County children are now having sweet dreams as they get tucked in at bedtime in new twin size beds, complete with new mattresses, pillows, pillowcases, sheets, and comforters.

Recently, local individuals, organizations, and businesses stepped up to volunteer and build new twin size beds for deserving children in McCreary County who were in need of new beds of their very own.

Thanks, in part, to efforts of McCreary County Middle School Youth Service Center Director David Durham, who was able to collect additional donations for the beds and bedding, volunteers were able to complete twenty-eight beds instead of the twenty beds originally planned in the project.

Last week, upon their arrival at the bed construction site at the McCreary County Airport, a group of volunteer bed builders were pleasantly surprised to discover Tim Freels and members of the McCreary County Airport Board had worked at night to complete many of the beds.  The group of volunteers quickly got busy and soon had the remaining beds built.

The beds were then distributed to children at Pine Knot and Whitley City Elementary Schools via the McCreary County Family Resource Centers.

“The parents and kids were tickled to get the new beds along with new mattresses, new pillows, pillow cases, sheets, and comforters,” volunteer Bobby Strunk noted.  “We hope to do this again and build more beds next year.”

Local businesses and organizations donating to the Build a Bed Project included the following:  Pine Knot Funeral Home, JC Egnew, United Cumberland Bank, Hills & Hollers Ministries, VFW and individual members, MC Furniture, Lumber King, and Hometown Furniture.

Volunteers who built beds included:  Tim Freels, Darrell Nixon, James Jackson, Jackie Lay, Tim Grooms, Randy Maxwell, Sean Strunk, Bobby Strunk, and Jim Cmolik.
