Spring Cleaning

Events make it easier to clean up for spring

By Eugenia Jones

As we turned our calendars to the month of March earlier this week, it was only natural to think of the arrival of spring and spring cleaning.

Several events are planned in the coming weeks to make spring clean-up for McCreary County home-owners and community members a bit easier.

First, McCreary County and the KY Division of Waste Management will sponsor the 2022 McCreary County Waste Tire Collection Event on March 31, April 1 (Thursday/Friday) from 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. and on April 2 (Saturday) from 8:00 a.m. until noon.  The tire collection event will take place at the State Highway Garage at 145 Memorial Drive in Whitley City, KY.

McCreary County residents are urged to take advantage of this free opportunity to properly dispose of any unwanted tires.  Tire retailers, junk yards, and recycling centers are not eligible to participate.  Regular tires (on or off rim) including truck, light truck, passenger, tractor, bicycle, motorcycle, golf cart, etc. will be accepted.  Foam or Calcium-filled tires, off-road construction tires, rubber tracks, and solid tires will not be accepted during this event.

For more information, contact McCreary County Deputy Judge Executive Nathan Nevels at 376-2413.

Soon after the tire collection event, McCreary County’s Spring Bulk Drop-Off Days (formerly known as Free Dump Days) will take place on April 8 (8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.) and April 9 (8:00 a.m. until noon.)

The following rules apply to the bulk drop-off event:

• Must be a customer with Scott Solid Waste to bring items to the Recycling Center in Stearns.

• Old furniture, appliances, and mattresses will be accepted.

• Motor oil or other hazardous chemicals will not accepted.  Cans of paint will be accepted if filled with kitty litter first.

• No tires or household garbage will be accepted.

• No contractor waste.

Drop off will be at the recycling center located at 100 Caterpillar Drive in Stearns.  Workers will be available to unload.

Finally, the Eastern Kentucky Pride HWY 90/Cumberland Falls Clean-Up will be April 30, 2022 (Saturday.)  More details about the event (including availability
