Stolen vehicle suspect arrested

By Eugenia Jones

Earlier this month on April 3, 2022, McCreary County Sheriff Randy Waters reported the theft of a silver 2013 KIA Optima.  The car was stolen while it was left running at Becky’s gas/convenience store in Marshes Siding as the owner went inside to purchase gas.  While inside the gas station, the owner watched as his vehicle pulled out and went south on US 27.  Video of the theft was also obtained.  McCreary County Sheriff’s Deputy Alex Jones received information about the theft from 911 dispatch at 5:55 p.m., responded, and went in search of the vehicle.  911 also advised Deputy Jones the vehicle had a handgun in the center console.

Later, at 9:07 p.m., Deputy Greg Chaney received a report that the stolen vehicle had been spotted on Lum Strunk Road in Strunk.  At 4:21 a.m. the following morning, McCreary 9-11 received a call from an individual stating he had found the stolen vehicle on an old logging road near the tracks off of Upper Shirt Factory Road in Stearns.  Officers Jones and Chaney arrived at the scene and located the stolen vehicle.  The vehicle smelled strongly of smoke, and officers subsequently discovered a homemade torch that had been lit inside of the vehicle.  The torch failed to ignite the vehicle; however, the rear speakers of the vehicle and other items were missing.  The handgun was not located in the vehicle or in the area.

At just a few minutes past midnight on April 6, 2022, 27 year old Dylan Shane Phillips was arrested at Mount Pleasant in Strunk in connection with the vehicle theft and charged with (1.) Theft by Unlawful Taking or Disposition-Firearm (2.) Arson, 3rd degree (3.) Theft by Unlawful Taking or Disposition Auto $10,000 < $1,000.  In connection with prior incidents, he was also charged with Contempt of Court, Failure to Appear, and Non-payment of Court Costs, Fees, or Fines.  Phillips was transported to and booked at the Knox County Detention Center.
