Man Rescued before Train Crash

By Eugenia Jones

Three McCreary County women acted quickly to safely escort an older man suffering from a medical condition from off of the tracks at the Mount Pleasant railroad crossing just minutes before an oncoming train collided with the gentleman’s 2004 GMC Sierra truck.

McCreary County Sheriff Randy Waters reports his office was dispatched on Friday, June 3, 2022 to investigate a motor vehicle accident involving a train and pickup truck.  Initial reports indicated the driver was possibly intoxicated since witnesses had observed the truck erratically travelling east on the HWY 1470 (Mt Pleasant Road) prior to attempting to cross the railroad tracks.  However, upon their arrival, law enforcement determined the driver was suffering from a medical issue.

In attempting to cross the tracks, the driver ran his vehicle off the right side of the tracks and got stuck.  The three women, who had been travelling behind the gentleman, saw he was unable to stand, falling into rocks as he got out of the truck.  The women immediately went and managed to assist the driver off of the tracks just before a train collided with the vehicle.  The train collided into the right side of the pickup truck causing the vehicle to land on its left side facing South on the left side of the tracks.

No injuries were reported as a result of the accident.  McCreary County Sheriff’s Office and McCreary County EMS were among those responding to the scene.
