Sister Dorothy Coulter

Sister Dorothy Coulter (Sister Anne Margaret), a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chambery, West Hartford, CT died at Amberwoods of Farmington on September 17, 2022. Born in Hartford, CT on September 21, 1937, of the late Eliott Kutz Coulter and Edna Mae Dowden Coulter, Sister Dorothy entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 1, 1960 and professed her Perpetual Vows on July 2, 1968.  At the time of her death, Sister Dorothy was 84 years of age and in her 62nd year of Religious Life. Previous to her entrance, Sister Dorothy attended Post Junior College in Waterbury and became a Medical Secretary.  Following her entrance into the Sisters of St. Joseph, Sister earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from the Diocesan Sisters College, West Hartford,  and a Masters Degree in Special Education from Southern Connecticut State University. Sister taught at St. Augustine School in Hartford, St Lawrence School in West Haven, and the Intensive Education Center and Cedar Court School in West Hartford.  In the latter two schools she was given the opportunity to help students with special needs.  Wishing to use her talents and experience in Appalachia, Sister Dorothy went to her mission of twenty- one years, teaching mentally challenged students in schools of Whitley City and Stearns both of McCreary County in Kentucky.  At McCreary County College, Sister Dorothy taught teachers how to use the Orton Gilingham Approach when teaching basic reading skills.  Sister Dorothy’s enthusiasm and creativity made her the ideal teacher.  Her students loved being in her classes. Having the ability to make each student feel loved yielded positive learning experiences for each one Sister taught. Sister Dorothy ‘s energy and joy was also manifested when Tap dancing,  or Clogging or playing with her beloved cat.   On her return to Connecticut, Sister Dorothy taught English as a Second Language to immigrants at Jubilee House in Hartford.  She will be remembered for her great kindness and thoughtfulness towards all.  In addition to her Sisters in Community, Sister Dorothy is survived by her sister, Sandra Lee Enquist, her brother, Thomas Drake Coulter, and her niece, Linda Pelland.  She was predeceased by her parents and her sister Shirley Bell. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at the Sisters of St. Joseph Provincial House, 27 Park Road at 11:00 am on September 26th.   Burial followed at the Sisters of St Joseph Cemetery on Ringgold St in West Hartford.  In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider a memorial donation to the Sisters of St. Joseph, c/o of Office of Mission Advancement, 650 Willard Ave., Newington, CT 06111.  Fisette-Batzner Funeral Home. 20 Bonair Ave., Newington has care of arrangements.     Obituary information provided as a courtesy of Hickman –Strunk Funeral Home.
