Property taxes due

Property owners get 2% discount if taxes paid by November 1, 2022.

Benjamin Franklin said it best; there are truly only two things certain in life, death and taxes.  Locally, the certainty of taxes in 2022 came true in the form of the McCreary County property tax bills recently mailed and received by most McCreary County property owners.

After each taxing district within a county establishes its tax rate for the year, Kentucky state law requires tax bills be printed and delivered to the county sheriff’s office for mailing.  The sheriff’s office is then required to mail tax bills to county property owners.

This year, McCreary County property owners receive a 2% early discount if tax bills are paid by November 1, 2022.  Afterwards, property owners are required to pay the face amount of the bill, with no discount, by December 31, 2022.  A 5% penalty fee will be added to bills paid from January 1, 2023 through January 31, 2023, and a 21% penalty will be added to tax bills paid after January 31, 2022.

Property tax bills can be paid at the McCreary County Sheriff’s Office through April 17, 2023.  After that date, tax bills are turned over to the County Court Clerk’s office for follow up. For general property tax information, visit:  https//revenue.ky.gov/Property/Pagers/default.aspx.
