Fred Berkowitz

Fredrick Joseph Berkowitz age 75 of Strunk, Kentucky passed away from this life on Friday, October 14, 2022 and was placed in the care of Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:00 pm at the Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Pine Knot Cemetery. The family will receive friends after 11:00 am Saturday at the funeral home. Fred was born on July 19th, 1947 in Chicago to the late Harvey and Elaine Berkowitz. He was a graduate of Maine South High School in Park Ridge Illinois and Devry Technical College in Chicago. Fred worked in the food service industry for most of his career and was the General Manager for the Whitley City Burger King and then the District Manager for the McCreary County and Pulaski County Burger King restaurants from 2005 until his retirement in 2012. Along with his wife Kathleen, Fred began a tradition of offering a hot home cooked Thanksgiving dinner to all McCreary Countians at the Whitley City Burger King restaurant. Once this tradition became too large for the one location, it was moved to the McCreary County Middle School. This yearly holiday meal eventually became what is now the annual “Banquet of Blessings” which is offered every Christmas Eve feeding thousands of individuals and families in McCreary County. Fred is survived by his wife, Kathleen, sister, Judith Diane Jones, brother, Gerald David Berkowitz, stepchildren, Daniel Fischer and wife, Anna, Sandi Pickrell and husband, Paul, Tammy Shelly and husband, Scott, Vicki Tunk and husband, Charlie, James Fischer Ferro, Theresa Ferro and Matthew Ferro. He is also survived by many step grandchildren and dear friends Margaret Burke and Thomas Hudock. Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Fred Berkowitz.
