This Friday is Veterans Day. There are many reasons why we set aside one day out of the year to honor the brave men and women, both living and dead, who sacrificed so much in order to protect our nation and guard our freedoms.
First, veterans chose to sacrifice their own comfort and left homes behind to protect the freedoms we cherish.
Secondly, veterans endured the rigors of military training, and in many cases, the horrors of war. Many veterans returned home from battle with broken emotions and bodies. Yet, those same veterans continued to feel pride in their country and its values.
Thirdly, veterans sacrificed and served for all of us, regardless of our race, religion, or gender.
It is important to remember veterans, not just on Veterans Day, but on every day of the year.
Let all veterans know we appreciate their service. There are many things we can do to show just how much we care.
- Look a veteran in the eye, smile, and thank them for their service.
- Buy lunch or coffee for a veteran.
- Send a thank you card to a veteran or remember a veteran on his/her birthday.
- Visit a veteran who is homebound or lives alone.
- Volunteer or donate to VA Hospitals and Clinics. Offer transportation to veterans who need rides to obtain services at the VA.
As a nation, we owe so much to our brave veterans.
Extending a simple expression of gratitude is the least we can do.
