Each year, Pine Knot Elementary School students take the i-Ready diagnostic test in both math and reading. This diagnostic provides data to teachers helping to identify individual areas of strength and weakness for each student. Students are then placed into individualized Flex Groups to support student needs. Many students at Pine Knot Elementary have mastered grade level content domains very early in the year. To support these students’ strengths, PKE has created Project Based Learning Flex Groups in both math and reading. Through these Flex Groups, students get to participate in a variety of projects designed to further strengthen their skills in math and reading. Here are a few of the projects these students have had a chance to participate in.
Hosting Family Math Night: These students designed and hosted math games during Pine Knot Elementary’s Title I Parent Teacher Night!
Peer Teachers: Last year, the Pine Knot Elementary Peer Teacher program began. These students support younger learners in both math and reading Flex Groups. Did you know the highest level of learning is teaching? Peer Teachers, having already met grade level standards on i-Ready, participate in two days of professional development training before hitting the classrooms. Here they learn proper questioning techniques and various support strategies.
Architectural Design: Students in Mrs. Angela Coffey’s Project Based Learning Class, are currently designing their own houses. Each person is provided a budget and must meet the constraints of that budget when constructing their homes. Each supply has a fee and students must balance their budgets during the construction of their homes. These students have sought additional income earning opportunities from their teachers to add additional funds to their budgets. It’s amazing to see the creativity that comes from this group and we can’t wait to see more to come.
