When you see someone is wounded you have an option to pour in oil or salt. You could be one that heals or causes more pain. The Bible says, “Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees.” A person who is drowning does not need swimming lessons. They need a life preserver. I believe that’s the core of the gospel of Christ. He is our life preserver who saves us. He will then teach us how to swim after we are rescued. The Bible says, “Freely you have received, freely give.” The forgiveness, hope, life, and joy that we have received from Christ is to be given to others.
The Bible says, “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” There is a story of a small dog who had been ran over by a wagon. The dog’s leg was broken and a local doctor took it in and mended it. This little dog became a favorite pet of the family. One day, however, the door was left open, and the dog ran away. The doctor said, “Just like people, this dog was ungrateful for all the help that I had given it.”
Weeks later, there was scratching and whining at the door. When the door was opened, there was that little dog with another injured dog beside it. This little dog knew where to take the hurting. As one has said, “We are one beggar pointing another beggar on where to get bread.”
Above all, love one another deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
